History of Cambodia 1987 to today

In 1987 Michael Gorbachev initiates new negotiations for the solution of the Cambodian conflict between the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Prince Sihanouk's exile government, and the government of the People's Republic of Kampuchea. It is decided that Vietnamese troups pull out by 1990. In 1989 the UdSSR, the US, and China can agree that the Khmer Rouge can no longer hold any kind of power in a Cambodian government. In 1989 Vietnam pulls out all remaining troops. In 1993 the first free elections are held under UN supervision. Norodom Sihanouk officially becomes king again. In 1998 Pol Pot dies. In 2004 King Sihanouk steps down and his son Norodom Sihamoni becomes the new king.
